Here is the story of why we don’t wear ties.

Matrix Companies CollageBrent Messmer was working in the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Comp’s claims department and then the fraud department when realized employers’ frustration with the abuse in the system.  Equally as frustrating was the dress code that required him to wear a tie each day. “Something different had to be done,” Brent said. “The system was bogged down, and I knew that I could do more to impact employers in the private sector.”

Brent immediately found that his surveillance efforts were not being fully utilized to minimize claims costs because the clients’ TPAs were not aggressive in pursuing those suspicious claims.

At our clients’ request, Matrix quickly expanded as Matrix Claims Management, a third-party administrator for Ohio workers’ comp, and quickly gained a reputation for aggressive claims management and excellent client service with a personal touch. Our first client remains a loyal client today.

A short time later (2004) Matrix introduced case management services to allow for a holistic approach to tough claims. By offering both investigations and case management in-house, Matrix could provide a complete strategy to get injured workers back to the job sooner or address suspicious claims.  In 2010, Matrix introduced unemployment claims and tax management services, which has produced great tax savings for our clients.

We always look for ways to help our clients reduce their workers’ comp costs. And the best way to reduce claims is to prevent injuries from happening, right? Most recently, Matrix launched Matrix Safety Services, our in-house safety division, to help create safer work environments.

Throughout  the years of rapid growth and positive recognition, Matrix has not wavered from our one-point-of-management model with small caseloads which make us unique in the industry.  This has been the key to our excellent service and high retention.

From the beginning, Matrix has stuck to a few basic philosophies in regard to our employees…hire people with the ‘Matrix Attitude’, put the right people in the right positions, provide them the tools to get their job done, and then get out of the way.   Oh, and one more thing– NO TIES.

Matrix offers a ‘best place to work’ environment through the simple concept of having fun while we work. Matrix maintains this culture in many ways, such as opportunities for charity work on company time, free monthly massages for all employees, happy hours, and frequent fun activities. According to Brent, “Happy employees result in happy clients.”

When you walk in to the Matrix office today, you can tell there is something different. Maybe it is the glass walls, the fact that people are smiling and laughing, or the rock and roll playing throughout the space.
